Hadith collections to start with: Riyad, Bulugh and Al-Muwatta

Colecciones de hadiz para empezar: Riyad, Bulug y Al-Muwatta

The Quran is the word of Allah, and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is its living explanation. Without the hadiths, many commands of the Quran would remain without detail: we would know that we must pray, but not how. That is why drawing closer to the hadith collections is a natural step for any Muslim who wants to live their deen with knowledge. Here we present three that, for different reasons, are ideal to begin with: one for the heart, one for practice, and one for its historical value.

Why these hadith collections and not others

There are many compilations, some enormous and technical, meant for scholars. For the beginner, the best are works organized by topic, with hadiths that are mostly authentic and of immediate use for daily life. The three we will look at fulfill that, and they also complement one another: one trains your character, another teaches you the rulings, and the third connects you with the first generations of Islam.

Riyad As-Salihin: for the heart and the character

If you could only have one book of hadiths at home, many scholars would tell you it should be this one. Riyad As-Salihin by Imam An-Nawawi is a carefully selected collection of hadiths on conduct, sincerity, patience, gratitude, the treatment of others, and the relationship with Allah. Its name means the Gardens of the Righteous, and that is exactly what it is: a garden you return to in order to water the soul.

The good thing about Riyad As-Salihin is that almost everything it contains can be applied this very day. You do not have to be an expert to benefit; it is enough to read a chapter and ask yourself how to improve in that aspect. It is ideal for reading with the family, in study circles, or alone before sleeping.

Bulugh Al-Maram: for learning the rulings

When you want to move from character to detailed practice (how to purify yourself, how to pray, the rules of fasting, of zakat, of trade), the reference work to begin with is Bulugh Al-Maram by Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani. It gathers the hadiths from which the practical rulings of fiqh are derived, ordered by legal chapters, and it usually indicates the degree of authenticity of each one and who transmitted it.

It is the book that generations of students study precisely because it teaches you to join the practice with its proof. You no longer pray a certain way just because, but because you know the hadith on which it is based. That connection between the act and its evidence gives an enormous sense of certainty and keeps you away from following customs without foundation.

Al-Muwatta: a treasure of the first generations

For whoever wants to drink from the earliest source, Al-Muwatta by Imam Malik ibn Anas is one of the first great compilations in the history of Islam. It contains not only hadiths of the Prophet ﷺ, but also sayings and practices of the Companions and of the people of Medina, the city of the Prophet ﷺ. That gives it a unique value: it shows you how the first community lived Islam, not in theory, but in their day to day.

It is a work that combines hadith and fiqh with the freshness of the first centuries. For many, reading Al-Muwatta is like looking out onto the Medina of those blessed years.

How to study hadith without getting lost

Some honest advice to make the most of them:

  • Do not read for quantity. A single hadith understood and applied is worth more than fifty skimmed over.
  • Start with Riyad As-Salihin for the heart, and add Bulugh Al-Maram when you want to go deeper into the rulings.
  • Mind the context. Some hadiths need the explanation of a scholar; do not draw fiqh conclusions on your own.
  • Apply what you learn before moving on to the next thing. Knowledge that is not lived is forgotten.
  • If you can, study with a teacher or with trustworthy recorded classes; hadith is better understood in company.

May Allah grant us to love the Sunnah of His Prophet ﷺ, to understand it well, and to live it with sincerity. If you want to start where the soul is most grateful for it, we encourage you to begin with Riyad As-Salihin and let each hadith draw your heart closer to Allah. May Allah make it easy for you.
