How to care for and respect your Quran: the adab of the mushaf

Cómo cuidar y respetar tu Corán: el adab del mushaf

There is something almost nobody teaches us calmly: how to care for the Quran in daily life. We learn to read it, to memorize surahs, to recite in the salah... but the physical handling of the mushaf, the book that holds the word of Allah, we often leave to intuition. And intuition sometimes fails: we leave it on the floor in a hurry, we stack it under other books, or we open it with hands full of crumbs. None of this is done out of a lack of love. It is, simply, that nobody explained the adab to us. So let us talk about it, brother, sister, without sermons and with sincerity.

The adab of the mushaf is not a list of rules to make us feel guilty. It is a way for our heart to remember, each time we touch the Quran, what we hold in our hands. The outer gesture cares for the inner feeling. When we treat the mushaf with care, we are educating something within ourselves.

How to care for the Quran when taking and reading it

First, the simplest thing: to have wudu whenever you are going to touch the Arabic text of the mushaf. Most scholars agree, based on the verse "none touch it except the purified" (Surah Al-Waqi'ah), that the mushaf is touched in a state of purity. If you are only going to read from a screen or from a translation without the Arabic, the matter is more flexible; but with the mushaf in Arabic, wudu is the firm adab.

Before you begin, look for a clean and quiet place, and say "A'udhu billahi mina-sh-shaytani-r-rajim" and the Basmala. No ceremony is needed: presence is needed. And here comes a practical detail that changes the experience completely: do not read the Quran on the floor or on your knees letting it drop. Raising it is part of the respect.

The stand: a small gesture with great meaning

Placing the mushaf on a wooden lectern or stand, instead of on your lap or on the bed, changes your posture and your attitude. You sit up straighter, you read with more attention, and you physically raise the word of Allah above worldly things. At home we use a Multifunctional Reading Stand - Brown because it allows you to adjust the angle and leave it open without straining the spine of the book. It is one of those small objects that, once you have them, you do not understand how you read without them.

Where and how to store the mushaf

The principle is simple: the Quran goes on top, never below. This means several concrete things in your home:

  • On a shelf, the mushaf should go on the top shelf, or at least above the other books. Never below novels, notebooks or magazines.
  • Never leave it directly on the floor. If you need to set it down for a moment, let it be on a table, a cushion or the stand.
  • Keep it in a clean and dry place, away from moisture and dust. A cover or clean cloth protects it from wear.
  • Do not place other objects on top of the mushaf: not the phone, not the keys, not a cup.

If you have several copies, that is fine. Having a Warsh Quran - Large at home for calm reading and a smaller one for travel is a blessing, not an excess. What matters is that each one has its dignified place.

For those who do not yet read Arabic fluently

Caring for the Quran is also understanding it. If you are still learning Arabic, do not stay only with recitation without comprehension: accompany yourself with a good annotated translation. The The Quran - Annotated Bilingual Edition places the Arabic and the Spanish side by side, so that you gradually connect each word with its meaning. And to go deeper into the meaning of each ayah, the The Quran Commented Translation - Lic. M. Isa Garcia is an honest and careful companion. The adab is not only about not leaving it on the floor: it is about not leaving it closed on the shelf.

When a mushaf wears out

Qurans get used, and that is good. But over the years the pages wear down, tear, become illegible. What to do then? It is not thrown in the trash nor treated like ordinary paper. The options transmitted by the scholars are: wrapping it in a clean cloth and burying it in a place where it is not trodden on, or burning it completely in a respectful way (as Uthman did, may Allah be pleased with him, with the copies that were no longer used). What we never do is discard it without honor.

The adab of the heart

In the end, all this outer care points to something inner. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ lived the Quran; it was, as Aisha said, "his character was the Quran". Caring for the mushaf with the hands is a daily reminder to care for it also with behavior: to act according to what we read, not to contradict with our life what we recite with the tongue.

If you want to carry a piece of that closeness with you during the day, some like a simple reminder such as the Ayatul Kursi Bracelet - Black, with the verse of the Throne. It does not replace the mushaf or its reading, of course, but it helps the heart not to drift away between one reading session and another.

Start with something small this week: give your Quran a dignified place at home, open it with wudu and read it on a stand. If you are looking for a place to rest it with respect, take a look at our Multifunctional Reading Stand - Brown. May Allah make it easy for you to care for His word, outwardly and inwardly.
