How to wash the khimar step by step
Most problems are avoided with a few simple habits at washing time:
- Cold or lukewarm water. Wash cold (30 degrees or less) whenever you can. Hot water is the main culprit behind colours losing their intensity and some fabrics shrinking.
- Inside out and in a bag. Turn the khimar inside out and, if it is delicate, put it in a mesh bag. This way you reduce friction, snags, and pilling on the fabric.
- Gentle cycle and a small load. A strong spin creases and deforms. A delicate cycle, with the machine not overloaded, treats the garment much better.
- Separate by colours. Wash dark tones together and light ones apart. It is the easiest way to avoid surprises from dyes that run.
- Mild detergent, without overdoing it. Too much soap leaves residue that dulls the fabric. Better a small amount, and avoid bleach and harsh whiteners.
Special care with light colours
Light tones ask for extra care, because any stain or colour transfer shows much more. - Do not wring the garment to drain it. Press gently with a towel to remove the excess water.
- Hang the khimar well stretched out, without clips that leave marks, so that it barely needs ironing afterwards.

- Store the khimars clean and completely dry; storing them with some moisture invites bad odour and mould.
- Fold without squeezing or hang them loosely to avoid permanent marks.
