How to perform wudu (ablution) step by step

Cómo hacer el wudu (ablución) paso a paso

Learning how to perform wudu is one of the first steps in the prayer life of any Muslim, and at the same time it's something we return to several times a day throughout our lives. Wudu, ablution, is the purification with water that prepares the body and the heart before the salah. It's not just washing: it's an act of worship that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us in detail. Let's go step by step, calmly.

How to perform wudu: the order according to the Sunnah

Wudu has obligatory parts and recommended parts that the Prophet ﷺ used to follow. Doing it completely, just as he did, multiplies the reward and helps you enter the prayer with more presence. This is the order:

  • The intention (niyyah). Begin in your heart with the intention of purifying yourself for Allah. It is not pronounced aloud; it's an inner resolve.
  • Say Bismillah. Begin by naming Allah before touching the water.
  • Wash the hands three times, up to the wrists, making sure the water passes between the fingers.
  • Rinse the mouth three times and gently draw water up the nose, then expel it, also three times.
  • Wash the face three times, from the hairline to the chin and from ear to ear.
  • Wash the arms up to the elbows, three times each, starting with the right.
  • Wipe the head with wet hands once, from front to back and back again, and clean the ears with the fingers.
  • Wash the feet up to the ankles, three times, starting with the right and passing the fingers between the toes.

When finished, it is Sunnah to say the testimony of faith. And here it's worth remembering the essential: prayer and purity are born of tawhid, of worshipping Allah alone. If you want to ground that foundation well, the eBook Explanation of the Conditions of La Ilaha Illa Allah (eBook) explains clearly the deep meaning of the shahada, that phrase we repeat but which deserves to be truly understood.

Common mistakes worth avoiding

With routine, we sometimes perform wudu on autopilot and slips creep in. These are the most common:

  • Leaving dry areas. The water must reach all the skin of the obligatory parts. A dry heel or a strip of the arm left unwetted invalidate that part of the wudu.
  • Being in a hurry. Doing it calmly helps you not skip steps and to be present.
  • Wasting water. The Prophet ﷺ performed wudu with little water. Turning off the tap between washes is part of doing it well.
  • Forgetting the intention. Without niyyah, the gesture loses its sense of worship.

What breaks the wudu

Wudu remains valid until something invalidates it. Among the things that break it are using the toilet, passing wind, deep sleep and everything that leaves the body through the natural passages. When this happens, you simply perform the ablution again before praying. With practice, recognising these moments becomes natural.

From wudu to prayer

Wudu is the antechamber of the salah, so it makes sense to also take care of what comes after. If you want to pray just as the Prophet ﷺ did, with each movement and each supplication in its place, the eBook How to Pray According to the Sunnah of the Prophet (eBook) is an excellent and easy-to-follow guide. And to pray comfortably, having a comfortable mat at hand like the Grey Flannel Sajadah makes the sujud more bearable, especially if you pray on a hard floor.

Don't worry if at first you're unsure of the order or repeat steps. We've all been there, and Allah loves those who purify themselves. With a few days of practice, wudu becomes a gesture as natural as breathing, and a moment of calm before you present yourself before your Lord. May Allah accept your purity and your prayer.
