The salat is the first thing we will be asked about on the Day of Judgement. It is not a formality nor an inherited custom: it is the servant's daily encounter with his Lord. That is why learning how to pray according to the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is no minor detail, it is taking care of the most important thing we have. And sometimes it is enough to have the right book beside the prayer mat for everything to change.
Why learn to pray according to the Sunnah
Many of us learned to pray as children, imitating our parents, and that is a blessing. But as we grow up we discover that we performed some gestures without knowing why, or that we carried along small mistakes without realizing it. There is no shame in that; the shame lies in not wanting to improve. The Prophet ﷺ said: pray as you have seen me pray. That is our reference, not the custom of the place nor what the majority does, but his example ﷺ.
Praying in accordance with the Sunnah has a special beauty: every movement, every supplication, every pause has a meaning and an origin in what he taught. When you understand what you say and why you do it, the prayer stops being mechanical and fills with presence. And that presence, the khushu, is precisely what distinguishes a living salat from a hurried one.
The book beside your prayer mat
Our best advice is practical: keep a reliable guide near where you pray and look up a question each time one arises. For this we wholeheartedly recommend How to Pray According to the Sunnah of the Prophet (eBook), by Sheikh Ibn Baz. It is a brief, clear explanation backed by evidence, which goes over the prayer step by step: from the intention and the takbir to the final taslim. Being an eBook, you carry it on your phone and open it at just the right moment, before or after praying.
Here are a few points worth paying attention to when reviewing your salat:
- The prior purity. A correct wudu is the key to the prayer; review it from time to time.
- Tranquility in each posture. The Prophet ﷺ ordered us to be still in the ruku and the sujud, without pecking like the birds.
- Understanding what you recite. Knowing the meaning of al-Fatiha and of the dhikr transforms the prayer.
- Consistency in time. Praying at its time, without delaying it out of laziness, is part of doing it well.
Caring for the place and the heart
Praying well also means surrounding yourself with what helps you concentrate. A clean space set aside for the salat, however simple, predisposes the heart. A good mat does its part: it marks out a place of your own for the encounter and invites you to halt the rhythm of the day. In our shop you will find the Beige Flannel Sajadah, soft and understated, designed to accompany your five prayers with comfort and without distractions. Luxury is not needed; what is needed is intention and a corner where you feel at peace before Allah.
And alongside the correct gesture, do not forget the foundation. The prayer is an expression of tawhid: we worship Allah alone, just as we affirm when we say La ilaha illa Allah. So that this declaration does not remain mere words and truly permeates your salat, it helps to understand its conditions. That is why we also suggest Explanation of the Conditions of La Ilaha Illa Allah (eBook), which clarifies what that testimony you repeat every day in your prayer truly entails.
Improving little by little
Do not expect to correct everything in a day. Choose one aspect each week, a posture, a supplication, a moment of calm, and work on it until it comes naturally. That way, without stress, your salat will gradually draw closer to that of the Prophet ﷺ. Remember that Allah loves consistent deeds even if they are small, and that every effort to improve your prayer is in itself an act of love toward Him.
An encounter that deserves the best of you
If there is anything worth striving for, it is how we present ourselves five times a day before our Creator. Learning to pray according to the Sunnah is not making life complicated: it is honoring that encounter and living it as it deserves. A good book, a quiet place, and a willing heart are all you need to begin.
Take that step today. Get How to Pray According to the Sunnah of the Prophet (eBook), place it near your mat, and let it improve your salat prayer by prayer. May Allah accept your prayers and make them a light for you.
